About
The Melbourne Céilí Band brings together a dynamic collective of musicians from Melbourne’s vibrant traditional music scene. Rooted in the rich heritage of Irish music and uniquely Australian folk traditions, the band pays tribute to those who nurtured and preserved this music, especially the legendary Fitzgerald brothers from County Clare and draws inspiration from the century-old musical legacy of Nariel Creek—a community where music and dance have flourished for generations.
The Melbourne Céilí Band brings together Irish expats and local musicians to create a sound rooted in tradition with a distinctly Australian edge. Their music is energetic, down-to-earth, and made for dancing—keeping the céilí spirit alive for new generations..
In 2023, the Melbourne Céilí Band (MCB) made history as the first Australian band to compete in the Senior Céilí Band category at Ireland’s prestigious Fleadh Cheoil. After months of passionate community fundraising, the band captivated an audience of over 6,000 people, receiving a standing ovation for their debut performance on the global stage of Irish traditional music.
Beyond the Fleadh, the MCB has thrilled audiences at major Australian festivals, including the renowned Woodford Folk Festival. Their energetic tunes, beautiful songs, and inclusive dancing create a dynamic fusion of culture, music, and movement that invites everyone to join in
The Melbourne Céilí Band acknowledges the Country which we live on and play our music in. We respect Aboriginal Australians and the Elders who are custodians of that Country; the Wurundjeri People of the Kulin Nation.
